What are Coaxial Speakers?

Coaxial speakers or full-range speakers are a type of speakers that have sound drivers in one integrated unit. The woofer, midrange and tweeter drivers are found in one unit. This is different from their counterpart  best component speakers.

Component speakers or separates have their sound drivers separated hence the name “separates”. To understand further the difference between the two here is a quick video.

What Should You Consider When Choosing The Best Coaxial Speaker?

#1- Configuration

Do you want a 2-way, 3-way or a 5-way speaker?  These are configurations. A speaker configuration is basically the number of sound drivers the speaker has. Most coaxial speakers are 2-way speakers meaning that they have a woofer and a tweeter.

In this case, the woofer will produce the low frequencies and the mid-frequencies.  The tweeter, on the other hand, produces high frequencies. The sound quality of a 2-way speaker is averagely good since the mid and the low frequencies are not separated.

A 3-way speaker with a woofer, midrange and tweeter drivers, on the other hand, will have a better sound quality. This is because the sound is split into frequency bands hence they will be produced in a clear and crisp manner. In short, the higher the number of sound drivers, the better the speaker.

#2- Frequency Response Range

The second thing you will need to consider when looking for the  coaxial speakers is the frequency response range. Frequency response range describes the sound capabilities of the speaker. It describes the limit frequencies that the speaker is able to produce. The wider the frequency range, the better the speaker.

For example, a speaker with a frequency response range of 30Hz to 22kHz means that it has a good sound response. A speaker of this type is good in bass production and also high frequencies. You should, therefore, look for this factor when you are looking for the coaxial speakers. The  best coaxial speakers for bass have a low-frequency response of as low as 10Hz.

#3- Speaker materials

Speaker materials have a huge impact on the sound quality and durability of the speaker. When choosing the best coaxial car speakers, try looking for a tweeter that is made with silk, polyurethane or textile blends. They are good at producing a warm sound. Hard materials like graphite, ceramics, and metals make the tweeter to have a popping sound.

The surround is another key material you will need to look at. This is the material around the woofer. It needs to withstand humidity and heat. The best surround material is rubber. Foam and cloth are cheap and serve as the best alternatives. Woofers on the other hand need to be stiff and lightweight. The most popular material is polypropylene.

#4- Cost

Cost of car speakers varies significantly from one model to another. Coaxial speakers generally have a moderate price as compared to components speakers. Replacing your old speakers with simple speakers will be cheaper as compared to replacing with high-tech systems.

High-end speakers are also expensive than normal speakers. It is always good to know your budget as compared to the kind of speakers you need before you make any purchases.

#5- Size of The Speakers

Coaxial speakers come in different sizes ranging from 4-inches, 6.5 -inches to 6 by 9 inches. These are the cone sizes and shapes. It is always important to consider the size of the speaker to go for. This is to ensure that you go for the right speakers and to avoid compatibility issues. Speakers with bigger cone areas are good in bass production and sound dissipation.

#6-Power Handling

Power handling is one of the most important features you should look at before choosing the  coaxial speakers of your choice. Choose a speaker with power handling capacity that matches that of the amplifier’s output. Always use the RMS value in making the selection since it is a true value of the speakers.

#7- Speaker Sensitivity

Sensitivity is another key factor that you may need to look at. Sensitivity is how loud a speaker gets when supplied with a given power. Lowly powered stereos require highly sensitive speakers. Highly-powered stereo system on the other hand will require speakers with low sensitivity.

Best Car Tweeters Reviews » Best Car Audio Tweeters In The World

Good sound quality means you can hear all the details of your favorite music. The right components for your system play a greater part in ensuring that you can hear all these frequencies. A complete and well-equalized car system should have the best car tweeters.

This will ensure that you not only get the bass and the mid from your bass and midrange drivers, but also get to hear the high frequencies. If you are planning to upgrade your system or improve the sound quality of your car’s audio system, tweeters are some of the components you will need to choose carefully.

In this article, therefore, you will find a review of the best tweeters and more details on how to choose the best car tweeters.

What to Consider When Buying The Best Car Tweeters

1- Type of Tweeters

What type of speakers do you run on your car? Are they component or coaxial? Mostly coaxial speakers do not require any tweeter. This is because coaxial speakers already have an inbuilt tweeter in them.  Sometimes however, these in built tweeters do not dissipate enough sound and hence you might need to do some modification and add an external tweeter.

Component speakers, on the other hand, will require tweeters for them to function fully. Choosing tweeters that are compatible with your component system is an important thing to do. Some systems will support a tweeter and a super tweeter. You need, therefore, to find the one which best suits your system.

To avoid the hustle of going through your system’s specification and trying to find a tweeter that fits it, you can try bullet tweeters. They are known for being compatible with a wide range of speaker systems.

2- Tweeter Material

Material plays a good part in determining the durability and sound quality of the tweeter. Good tweeters are made of materials that are soft like textile blends, poly or silk. These materials give smooth, refined and mellow sound.

If you are looking to install tweeters for more bright and harsh sounds, go for hard materials like graphite, ceramics and metal. Here is a short video for comparison between bullet tweeters and regular tweeters.

3- Swiveling or Pivoting Tweeters

When it comes to tweeter installation, the mode of mounting is essential. Will you need a fixed pivoting or swiveling pivoting tweeter?  The reason you need to consider this is because tweeters produce directional high-frequency sounds.

Therefore, the way they are directed towards the listener brings a lot of effects.  Good tweeters for the car need to create an illusion that the listener is just close to the stage where an artist is performing. Swiveling tweeters are, therefore, the best to go for.

4- Crossover

What is a crossover? In simple words, a crossover is what separates and directs frequencies to the right components. Without a crossover, a component will be trying to produce frequencies that it is not intended to produce. The result will be distortion or too much power consumption.

You should, therefore, look for a tweeter either with an inbuilt HP (High Pass) crossover or an external HP crossover. This means that anytime a signal will be directed to the tweeter, it will be filtered by the crossover leading to a clean and crisp sound.

5- Detachable tweeters

Would you wish to use your tweeter in a separate car or home audio one day? Some component or full range speakers come with a detachable tweeter. This is so that you can remove or replace them with new ones. You might need to consider that as you look for the best car audio tweeters.

6- Power handling

Tweeters just like any other speaker use power. It is important; therefore, to consider the power that it can handle. Good tweeters for a car must specify the power ratings they can handle. Find out if they match your car’s system.

If your system is run on a powerful amplifier, the tweeter should match the output gain given by the amplifier. Look at the RMS power handling since this is what the speaker can handle continuously.

What To Consider When Looking For The Best 4×6 Speakers

Before you do any shopping, there are some crucial factors you will need to consider. It is important you gather some details about the speakers that are already in your car. Some of the details and factors to consider include the following;

#1- Coaxial Or Component Speakers

The argument about which one to go for between component and coaxial speakers is complicated. There is no simple answer to that argument as it all depends on many factors.  Coaxial speakers are the best when it comes to budget and installation. They, however, have average sound quality.

If you are a high quality music lover and you want the best quality from your speakers, component speakers might be the best choice.  They offer the best sound quality and staging. They are, however, expensive and difficult to install.

#2- Power Handling

Another key feature you will need to look at is the power handling capabilities of the speaker. Is the speaker able to handle the power being input by the head unit or the amplifier? This means that you will need to check the ratings of your amplifier or the head unit before you go for any speaker. If you are planning to install the whole system, then it is good to go for the head units and the amplifier first.

What is power handling? It refers to the level of power one can pump through the speakers measured in Watts. The most given power handling ratings are RMS and the Peak or the maximum value. The important value is the RMS (Root Mean Square). Make sure that it is within what the amplifier and the head unit can supply.

#3- Configuration

Most of the people get mixed up between getting 2-way or 3-way speakers. So, what is the difference between the two and which one should you go for? First, what is speaker configuration? A speaker’s configuration is the number of drivers a speaker has. The 2-way speaker has two drivers which are a woofer and a tweeter. A 2-way speaker has more bass combined with mid bass and separated high frequencies. A 3-way speaker, on the other hand, has 3 drivers. These are a woofer, a mid-range driver and a tweeter. It produces separate bass, mid frequencies and high frequencies. A 3-way speaker will sound better than a 2-way speaker

#4- Sensitivity

Another key factor to look for if you are looking for the best 4×6 car audio speakers is sensitivity. Sensitivity is how louder a speaker will get if supplied with certain power. A speaker with higher sensitivity means it will require less power to get louder while that with low sensitivity speaker will require more power. Most standard speakers have sensitivities between 88dB to 92 dB.

#5- Speaker Build quality

One of the major reasons why you are upgrading is to get good quality speakers. Most of the factory speakers do not have quality materials. They, therefore, degrade over time.  You need to ensure that you reap the most from your upgraded speakers. One of the ways to do that is by buying a speaker made with the high quality material.

Some of the materials to look at are the surrounding material. Rubber surround is the best for durability. For cone materials; polypropylene that is mixed with mica is the best when it comes to cone materials. Metal-coated synthetic fabrics are the best for durability and long-time performance.

#6- Compatibility

Compatibility plays a crucial role in getting aftermarket speakers. Before you spend any cash on buying your new speakers, you will need to find out if the potential speakers are compatible with your car. Are they made in a manner that they can fit into the factory speaker points of any car without any modifications?

#7- Cost of the speakers

Determine your budget before you do any purchases.  This will ensure that you remain in the range of your budget. You can also change the budget in favor of the best speakers.

#1- Rockford Fosgate Punch P1462 4 x 6-Inches Full Range Coaxial Speakers

Via: Amazon.com

This is a 4 by 6 inches full range speaker that excels in sound production quality and budget. The sound quality is attributed to the butyl rubber surround that keeps the cone flexible and durable. It has a VAST surround giving more radiating cone area. The cone is also propylene injected and mineral-filled for great sound production. The tweeter, on the other hand, has a PEI dome tweeter.

Still, on sound production, it has a frequency response of between 90Hz to 22 kHz. This means that you will hear most of the mid bass and less sub bass sounds. It works better if linked up with a subwoofer. Other than that, you will hear plenty of the high frequencies. It also has a good sensitivity of 90dB at 1 watt per meter. This means that it has excellent loudness even with low power input.

Regarding installation, it is fitted with a flex fit basket which is compatible with factory speaker locations. The frame uses slots, unlike most speakers which use single screw sized holes. What this does is that it allows you to do some adjustments as you install the speaker in place. There will be no need for more holes.

Most of the time, you will find other speakers with exposed crossovers which increases the threat of the speakers getting damaged. Luckily for these speakers, they feature integrated concealed crossover. Here the crossover is hidden allowing easier installation and cleaner look.

What We Like

  • The speakers have slots instead of single screw holes for quick installation.
  • VAST surround for the large radiating area.
  • The sound quality is well balanced between mid-bass and the high frequencies.
  • Works well with an external amplifier.
  • Has low power handling capacity of 30 Watts RMS meaning at low power it can still work

What We Didn’t Like

  • Not good with bass and distorts at high volumes of bass.

With enough power, it produces a decent bass.  They also sound great when installed on the dashboard.  The woofer and the tweeter give a clean and crisp sound together.

They also excel in installation. Their 4-inch by 6-inch size will fit perfectly to the factory installation points. You will not require any kind of modifications.  These speakers have a great high-power handling capacity. They can work perfectly with high-power head units. Basically, these are the be

#3- Alpine SPS-406 4×6″ Coaxial 2-Way Speaker

Via: Amazon.com

Alpine SPS-406 speaker set consists of well sounding speakers that are made to suit any vehicle. The high efficient speakers are designed with a power handling rating of 45 watts RMS. This means that even at low power input, it can still work well.

It also has a peak value of 140 watts and an impedance of around 3.6 ohms. This means that it won’t consume a lot of power from the amplifier or drive the amplifier too hard. On sound quality, it has an outstanding sound quality with a frequency response of 93Hz to 22 kHz.

With this kind of frequency response, the speakers will have a low bass response but an excellent response on the higher frequencies. The speaker also has a sensitivity of 87dB meaning it will respond louder even with low power supply.

Another unique feature of this speaker set is that it has a poly-mica cone and optimized magnet voice coil motor technology. The voice coil is a square-wire short voice coil ensuring that every electrical signal that comes in as input is successfully converted into sound.

Sometimes speakers tend to overheat leading to a shorter time span. These speakers, however, have optimized air flow design. On matters regarding installation, these speakers allow shallow mounting because they have a stamped shallow frame which allows quick installation.

What We Like

  • Unique woofer material.
  • Square-wire short voice coil for efficient sound conversion.
  • Optimized air-flow design for effective cooling.
  • It has a larger speaker for greater sound.
  • Perfect for tunes with high frequencies.

What We Didn’t Like

  • Low bass response.

#4- Kicker KSC4604 KSC460 4×6″ Coax Speakers with .5″ tweeters 4-Ohm

Via: Amazon.com

This is yet another set of 2-way speakers made of a woofer and a tweeter. These best sounding 4×6 speakers have an extended dynamic range. The tweeters are made of a silk dome. This is to allow smooth sound instead of sharp piercing sound that can sometimes be annoying.

The woofer, on the other hand, has a polypropylene cone with a tough rubber surround. This is to ensure that even at high volumes, the speaker remains intact and does not distort.

On matters regarding power handling, the speakers also have an impedance rating of 4 Ohms which is within the standard range of many good sounding speakers. They have a high-power handling capacity of RMS 75 Watts and the peak value of 150 Watts. This means that they will require a little powerful head unit. They also have a standard sound sensitivity of 88dB at 1 Watt.

Regarding the sound quality, the speakers have excellent performance. They have a frequency response of 50Hz to 20 kHz.  With this wide dynamic range, the speaker will have a high bass response of as low as 50Hz and high frequency response of as high as 20 kHz.

These speakers also fit many GM vehicles and offer quick installation. The speakers have a mounting diameter of 4-inches by 16-inches. They have a top mount depth of 16 inches and bottom mount depth of 2 inches.

What We Like

  • Wide frequency response or dynamic range.
  • Accurate bass and smooth high frequency response.
  • Accurate power handling ratings.
  • Clean mid-range and highs.
  • Good for the price.

What We Didn’t Like

  • It lacks speaker grilles for protection.

#5- Pioneer TS-A4676R 4″ x 6″ 3-Way Speaker

Via: Amazon.com

This is a 3-way full-range speaker set consisting of a woofer, a mid-range driver, and a tweeter. These drivers allow a wider dynamic range of deep bass, wide mid frequencies as well as smooth and crisp high frequencies. The woofer consists of a wide rigid multilayer mica matrix cone structure for wide dispersion of sound.

On the woofer are a midrange driver and tweeter which are designed to deliver a wider range of mid to high frequencies. The speaker consists of a 200 Watts max power and a lower 30-watt nominal power. This means that even at a low power supply, the speaker will still respond well.

Since the speaker can work at the high power supply, the speaker has high chances of overheating. To ensure that the speaker remains cool, Pioneer added a cooling basket to this speaker hence enhancing its power handling capabilities.

Another great feature of this speaker is its new spider design. The new design incorporates a material similar to the one used in the PRS series. This material is commonly used in high-end component speakers which offer stiffer suspension and accurate respon

What We Like

  • Highly compatible.
  • Clear and crisp sound.
  • High power handling performance.
  • Fitted with a cooling mechanism.
  • New spider design that offers an accurate response.

What We Didn’t Like

  • Most of them are prone to blowing after some few months of use.

Via: Amazon.com

If you are really after upgrading your car speakers but on a fixed budget, then this is one of the best Kenwood 6.5 speakers you should go for. It is a 2-way speaker that features a polypropylene cone that will enrich your favorite playlist with midrange and mid-bass details.

The mid-bass can go as low as 35 Hz, and the midrange can go as highs 22 kHz which gives this speaker a bigger and widespread response. To complete on the other end is the 1-dome balanced tweeter that will soar with high frequencies.

For power handling, it boasts of 300 watts of power and an RMS value of 30 watts. This means that it will work with a modest amplifier effectively. You don’t need a high power amplifier. What makes it even more appealing about this speaker is that it has an impedance of 4 ohms which means it will work well with the underrated wires of the factory system.

When it comes to installing them, it is worth noting that they come with stunning grilles that will give you that warm interior customization.

What We Like

  • It is a 2-way speaker that has a woofer with treated cloth surround.
  • Has high response that lies between 35 Hz and 22 kHz.
  • Comes with a 6.5-inch polypropylene woofer with treated surround.
  • The unit has a high-end tweeter for high frequencies.
  • Has moderate power handling which means it will need a modest amp.

What We Didn’t Like

  • The metal clip that holds the speaker wire is cheaply made.

#2- Kenwood Kfc-P709Ps 6.5-Inch Performance Series Component Speaker System

Via: Amazon.com

If you are looking for a component speaker to upgrade your factory speakers with, then this will be your ideal choice. It features an injected polypropylene cone with a diamond array pattern and converted crossover network.

On frequency response, we can say it is fair. It goes as low as 63Hz and as high as 24 Hz which means you will hear more of the highs and the midrange. What about its power handling qualities? This pair of component speakers excels when it comes to how it handles power.

The speakers operate at 80 W RMS, 280 W peak, 4 ohms impedance which means these speakers are good with a high-end amplifier. To ensure that the individual components are well supplied with respective frequencies, they are connected through a crossover network.

What We Like

  • They have a moderately practical power handling capabilities.
  • Comes with an advanced crossover network.
  • Injected propylene cone that will cover most of the midrange.
  • It has a one swivel dome tweeter.
  • Best component speakers for under $100.

What We Didn’t Like

  • They are not compatible with most of the speaker installation compartment.

#3- Kenwood KFC-1695PS 320W 6.5″ 3-Way Performance Series Flush Mount Coaxial Speakers with Paper Cone Tweeters

Via: Amazon.com

These are some of the best midrange speakers produced by Kenwood. If you are not so much into the bass details, then these will be the best for you.  They have a frequency response of 75Hz to 20 kHz that is covered through the 3-way configuration.

This means that the midrange woofer will go as low as 75 Hz, a frequency that falls within the limit that the human ears could have captured anyway. The two tweeters hit as high as 20 kHz. For power handling, these speakers are great.

They have a peak power of 150 watts which means that for the short bursts of power that your amplifier will be releasing, these speakers will handle them well. They also operate on a continuous power of 75 watts which is actually necessary to drive the three components which are the woofer, tweeter, and the super tweeter.

When it comes to installation, you can install them to a depth of 1-13/16 inches. This means that if you will need to do some modification before you install them, doing so won’t have much damage to your car.

What We Like

  • They have a top-mount depth of 1-13/16 inches.
  • 3-way configured.
  • Adds a ½ inch ceramic super tweeter.
  • Has a peak voltage of 320 W and an RMS of 75 watts that will be good for the amplifier.
  • Comes with a high definition super tweeter.

What We Didn’t Like

  • They do not fit into the speaker mount holes.

#4- Kenwood KFC-1665S 300-Watt 6.5-Inch 2-Way Sport Series Flush Mount Coaxial Speakers with Paper Tweeters

Via: Amazon.com

What makes this speaker different from the Kenwood KFC-1665S 6.5 coaxial speaker’s stereo is the price. This one is a little cheaper. On other features, they are almost of the same. This one has a 2-way configuration with a woofer that will enrich your music with midrange frequencies. The 1 balanced-dome tweeters, on the other hand, will make the high frequencies roar of your speakers.

What’s more, it has a 6.5-inch cone that is polypropylene made. The tweeter on the other end is 1 inch and balanced right in the middle of the cone for a clear stereo field. These speakers are efficient when it comes to the consumption of power.

With a power handling of 300 watts peak and 30 watts RMS, it will work well with your factory amp if you can’t access any high-end amplifier. The low impedance of 4 ohms makes this speaker good with the factory wires. The only issue to be worried about when using this speaker is the size of the magnets which translates to low sounds produced.

What We Like

  • They have a 6.5-inch polypropylene cone.
  • It has low 4 ohms impedance that makes it good with factory wires.
  • A low RMS of 30 watts making it good with the factory support.
  • Comes with a midrange details woofer of 6.5 inches.
  • They are cheaper.

What We Didn’t Like

  • They have small magnets meaning low sound productions.

#5- Kenwood KFCX173 Excelon 6.5-Inch 2-Way Flush Mount Speakers

Via: Amazon.com

What this speaker excels in is the cone. It has a carbon-polypropylene hybrid cone with a diamond array pattern. To make it more durable and withstand the high hitting cone vibrations, they are fitted with a rubber surround. They have an averagely good sensitivity of 87 dB. That is why its power ratings are as high as 240W.

On matters dealing with frequency production, they have a response of 63 Hz to 24 kHz. This means that the 1-inch silk dome midrange will go as low as 63 Hz and give you that sweet mid-bass in your music and cover most of the midrange frequencies which includes crystal clear vocal frequencies. On the other end, the high frequencies are played by a ¾ inch PEI dome tweeter.

You won’t be left behind as well when it comes to installation; you will have a downhill task in performing the installation process as they come with a top-mount depth of 3.25 inches. What makes them good for the best front speakers is that they have a three times stronger magnet which yields a well-balanced frequency across the spec

What We Like

  • Have good vocal frequencies.
  • A ¾ inch tweeter plays the high frequencies.
  • Have a high-frequency response of 63 Hz to 24 kHz.
  • Sensitivity is of 87 dB which is good given its power ratings.
  • These speakers also have good and high ratings.

What We Didn’t Like

  • They distort at high volumes when used without an amplifier.

#6- Kenwood KFC-6965S 6 x 9 Inches 3-Way 400W Speakers

Via: Amazon.com

There is no doubt that these are one of the best car speakers. Let’s start with the sound quality. This pack of 2 speakers is made to bring the experience of music live inside your car. The speakers excel when it comes to sound quality; they have a frequency response range of between 30Hz to 22,000Hz.

Such a frequency response range means that you can hear frequencies as low as 30Hz, which mostly are the sub-bass. If you really want to feel the energy of the music, then the best speakers to go for are those that give low frequencies like this one.

They are also 3-way speakers; each speaker consists of a woofer, a tweeter and super tweeter. The woofer, of course, is responsible for the low and the low-mid frequencies. The tweeter covers the high mid frequencies and the super tweeter deals with the high frequencies.

This brings the staging effect to your car. It also improves the sound quality since the frequencies are well equalized into three bands. What about power handling? Each speaker has a peak power handling capacity of 400 watts and an RMS value of 45 watts.

These are average values; they can still run on the factory amplifier. If you are planning to power them up using an external amplifier, they will run well. With a sensitivity of 92 dB, they have good sound production even in the event of a low power supply.

What We Like

  • They are clear and crisp, no distortion.
  • Good speakers for the price.
  • Simple to install and compatible with most installation points.
  • Produce strong and punchy bass.
  • Excellent power handling capacity.

What We Didn’t Like

  • The super tweeter is harsh especially when playing high frequency songs.

#7- Kenwood KFC-C6894PS 6 x 8 Inches 3-Way Performance Series Speakers

Via: Amazon.com

Are you looking for the best 6 by 8 inches speakers? Kenwood has developed another series of the best car speakers, coaxial and 3-ways speakers.  These speakers are crystal clear and crisp, thanks to the 3-way configuration. The frequencies are equalized into three channels, the bass, mid and the high frequencies.

This overturns the muddiness that most 2-way speakers have where frequencies of the different ranges are forced through one driver. They have a frequency response range of between 63Hz to 22 kHz; this means that you will be able to hear the bass as low as 63Hz and high frequencies as high as 22 kHz. A frequency range of this kind means that you won’t be able to hear most of the sub bass. Hooking them up with a subwoofer will be a wise idea.

On power handling, they each have a peak value of 80 watts, impedance of 40 Ohms and sensitivity of 87 decibels. What this value means is that they can handle the power of not more than 80 watts. Driving them on low powered amplifiers will be good.

The sensitivity means that even at a power supply of as low as 1 watt, the speaker will still be able to get as loud as 87decibels. The impedance is the resistance that the speakers offer, which is low and, therefore, reduce power consumption.

On matters to do with installation, they are simple and have the oval shape of diameter 5 1/16 by 7 3/8 inches and a mounting depth of 2 3/8 inches. They can be installed on most car installation points without major modifications.

What We Like

  • Good treble and bass.
  • Fit perfectly on the front and back doors.
  • Have compatible depth like the stock speakers.
  • Sound good without an amplifier.
  • They are cheap and good sounding.

What We Didn’t Like

  • They tend to blow.

#8- Kenwood KFC-4675C 60-Watt 4-Inch x 6-Inch Two-Way Speaker System

Via: Amazon.com

Are you looking for a good performing speaker that is good for the budget? Kenwood KFC-4675C is one of such speakers. It is a 2-way speaker comprising of a tweeter and a woofer. The woofer is made of an injected and molded polypropylene cone woofer. Propylene is known to be flexible, light and durable. It can displace enough air giving a heavy bass.

The tweeter, on the other hand, is made of 1-inch polyamide balance dome tweeter. With this type of a dome, it can produce clear and moderate high frequencies. While these speakers might not be “performance series,” they have good power handling capacity. They can handle power from high-power head units.

With a size of 4 inches by 6 inches, they can be quickly and simply installed on the dash board without major modifications. The factory grills also fit them perfectly. You don’t need to get worried about buying extra grills or mounting tools.

If you relate these simple and price-worthy speakers with stock speakers, they are good with the highs and the mid frequencies. They also have low power handling capacities in comparison to most of the upgrade speakers.

What We Like

  • Budget friendly and good performance.
  • Easy to install and compatible with most factory installation points.
  • Low power consuming and can work with head units.
  • Clear and compared to factory speakers.
  • Direct fit and great sound compared to stock.

What We Didn’t Like

  • They do not have strong and punchy bass.

What to consider when looking for the best Kenwood speakers

#1- Type of speakers

This is a very important factor that needs to be considered when looking for the best car speakers. It not only falls on the best Kenwood  speakers but also all the vehicle speakers. There are basically two types of speakers available in the market, Coaxial and component speakers. Knowing the difference between coaxial and component speakers is very important as explained in this video.

Most of the Kenwood speakers are coaxial or full range speakers, a few of them are component speakers. The coaxial type is the most preferred because of the ease to install them, and they are cheaper. If you are doing your car system upgrade on a tight budget limit, then the best one to go for is the Kenwood coaxial speakers. They are cheap and will never require advanced skills when installing them.

If you are generous with your wallet, the best ones to go are the component speakers. They are expensive, and you will get the most out of them. They are good with clarity and frequency response. You will have that freedom to position the components wherever you feel like positioning them.

Kenwood has really tried to bring the features of their component speakers out. They have powerful mid-bass woofers that can play as low as 65Hz. A woofer like this one could be the best one to go for since you will be able to hear the bass details of the speaker.

They also have good midrange drivers that are good for sound quality and sound response. Tweeters also play a great role in bringing out the overall sound. You might want to see how they have made the tweeters and their capabilities.

See Also: Best JBL Car Speakers

#2- Is it 2-way or 3-way?

This is another factor that you should carefully consider when looking for car speakers and mostly Kenwood speakers. Most of the Kenwood speakers are 2-way. For a 2-way speaker, it means you will have a woofer and a tweeter. This will affect the sound details that will come out of it. You might mostly hear the midrange frequencies and the highs only.

A 3-way, on the other hand, will have a woofer, midrange component, and a tweeter. In this case, it means you will have a more detailed sound coming out of the speakers. The low frequencies that represent the bass will come out of the woofer will the vocals.

Most of the instruments will be played out of the midrange component and the high melodies, percussions and hats will be played out of the tweeter. This means therefore that if you are left with an option of a 2-way and a 3-way speaker after considering other factors, your best option would be a 3-way speaker.

#3- Power handling

When it comes to power handling, there is no questionable doubt why you shouldn’t consider this factor. It is one of the major features that are used to determine the strength of any speaker. There are normally two values quoted when naming a speaker’s power handling rating; these are the peak value and the Random Mean Square (RMS).

These two values refer to the maximum and mean continuous power output from the amplifier that the speaker will receive.  Most of the time the peak rating is not necessary as it is exaggerated by manufacturers. RMS is the key when noting the ratings. The higher the RMS value, the higher your amplifier’s power requirement.

Speaker specifications always include the minimum and the maximum values. The minimum value is not commonly included in many speakers. If you ever come across a speaker with a minimum rating, this is the minimum value of the amplifier output that if sent to the speaker will make it produce some sound.

A maximum rating means the highest point at which the amplifier should supply power to the speaker beyond which the speaker will distort.

#4- Impedance of the speaker

Impedance is the amount of resistance that the speaker offers to the electrical signal that is passed to it before it is converted to sound.  A speaker on its own is a resistor, but what makes impedance different is it changes with the electrical signal.

Since music has different frequencies, the impedance will keep changing, but it will always range from a mean value which is given as a specification. A 4-ohm speaker is likely to require an amplifier that will give out enough power.

Since most speakers have this much impedance, it is important to consider this value. A higher impedance speaker will use the power of the AV receiver and work well.

#5- Speaker Material

Most of the speakers vary when it comes to the material used in making them. Tweeters use materials like polyurethane, silk and textiles. Some will come with materials like ceramics, metal, and graphite which are known for pop sound and handling higher tunes.

For the woofer, they are mostly made of polypropylene which is known to handle and withstand pumping basses. The rubber surround is also a good material to offer support to the cone.

Foam or cloth surrounds can be used though they are expensive. You should, therefore, watch for this material as you shop for your best Kenwood car speakers.

#7- Speaker Sensitivity

A lowly powered stereo system will require highly sensitive speakers and the high powered stereo system will require a less sensitive speaker.

#8- Cost of the speaker

Budgeting is the key when shopping. For more capability speakers, you will need to adjust your budget to a higher level. There are cheap speakers however that will still sound good. Most of them are Kenwood speakers. It is always important that if you decide to go for component speakers, you should look at the budget for installing them.

#1- JBL GTO939 Premium 6 x 9 Inches Co-Axial Speaker –JBL Car Speakers 6×9- Editor’s pick

Via: Amazon.com

Are you looking for the best 6×9 speaker to install in your car? This one will be the one to go for. First, it is amazing by how it designed to produce enough bass. It has large carbon injected cones. This allows the speaker to move a large volume of air while vibrating. A large volume of air displaced means a heavy and punchy bass. You may not need a subwoofer having these speakers.

The second feature that you may probably like about these speakers is that they have soft dome tweeters. Speakers with this kind of tweeters are amazing when it comes to bringing the staging effect to your car. Also, the tweeters have oversized voice coils which allow high heat dissipation and high-power handling. This reduces fatigue and allows for smooth power handling.

Another great feature about these 3-way speakers is that they have a dual-level volume adjustment. The adjustment allows you to more or less compensate irregularities arising from the speaker placement. The level settings can be customized depending on your listening preference. How good is that?

Factors To Consider When Looking For The JBL Car Speakers

Before making up your mind on which JBL car speakers to buy, it is important to consider some few factors. This will ensure that you land on the right and the JBL car speakers. Here are a few features to consider;

Via: Amazon.com

Type

JBL speakers are found in two types just like most of the car speakers. They are either coaxial or component speakers. Each of this type comes with benefits and limitations. Let’s examine each one of them separately;

#1- Coaxial speakers or Full range

JBL speakers have a unique design which is easily recognizable. Coaxial JBL speakers are uniquely designed, and most comprise of the woofer, tweeter and the midrange driver if any. All these drivers are in one unit. This type of speakers is good in sound quality, easy to install and cheap.

They are, however, not good in bringing the staging effect into the car since the components are all in one location and facing one direction. Full range speakers can either be found in two configurations; 2-way or 3-way speakers as you are going to see later.

#2- Component or ‘separate’ speakers

JBL speakers can also be found as component speakers. Component speakers have the drivers, i.e., the woofer, tweeter and midrange-driver all as separate components hence the name ‘separate.’

They have better sound quality and staging effect as compared to coaxial speakers. Because of the separate components, they have a good sound quality. On the flip side, they are expensive and difficult to install. Here is a quick video that will help you understand the difference between coaxial and component speakers.

Just like Coaxial speakers, they can be found as 2-way or 3-way configurations. Which brings us to the second factor.

#3- 2-Way or 3-way

2-way JBL speakers have 2 drivers which are a tweeter and woofer. 3-way speakers, on the other hand, have a twitter, a midrange driver and a woofer. 2-way speakers are fairly good at sound quality but not as good as 3-way speakers.

The best choice for you should be 3-way speakers. For a 3-way speaker, the frequencies are separated into three bands, the lows, mid and the highs. As a result, the quality becomes clean and wide as compared to that of a 2-way speaker.

Speaker Sensitivity

Speaker sensitivity is how much louder a speaker will sound with a supply of one watt of power from an amplifier. Speakers with higher senstivities will be louder. Do you want a louder speaker? If you want a louder speaker, go for the one with high sensitivity and vice versa. If your car’s stereo is highly powered, then you should go for less sensitive speakers.

Power handling

JBL speakers are known to have good power handling capacity. Power handling capacity is how much power the speakers can withstand before they blow. There are RMS and peak power. The RMS (Root Means Square) power is what matters. You should, therefore, ensure that the speaker’s power ratings match the one of your amplifier or the power maximally supplied by your amplifier.

Material of construction

The material of construction is another key factor that one needs to consider before buying the JBL speakers. Most of the JBL speaker cones are made with carbon injected material. These polymers are great for sound production.

Tweeters made with materials like polyurethane produce warm sounds while those made with steady material like ceramic and metal produce pop sound. Woofers made of lightweight and strong materials like polyurethane produce accurate bass.

Look at the surround, is it rubber or foam? Rubber is durable but expensive while foam is cheap and does not last. Remember that cheap is expensive.

Compatibility

Have all the measurements of your head unit or factory stereo and ensure that the speakers you are going to go for are compatible.  Check the model, sizes, the design, the mounting depths, the radius, the wiring and the power rating. They should match your factory system. This is especially if you are not willing to make modifications.

Cost of the speakers

What is your budget? If you intend to upgrade your system with high end speakers, it means that you should have your wallet fully loaded.  Look at your budget, therefore, before you set out to look for the JBL car speakers. You are lucky in this review we have included all kinds of speakers from the cheapest to expensive.

For this case, JBL speakers are among the top speaker brands that perform well. For a person who has developed some love for this brand, finding the best JBL speakers won’t be an uphill task.

The speakers reviewed above are the best among the best. Each of them has excellent and unique features and functions. Finding the best of them all was hard, but we reached a conclusion and settled on JBL GTO939 PREMIUM 6×9 Inches speakers.

This was because of so many reasons. One is budget; they are moderately cheap but still highly performing. Secondly are the structural features. They have good features from power handling to sound quality. Thirdly is installation, they are easy and quick to install.

These speakers were also highly reviewed by those who have bought and installed them. They, however, received negative reviews on the material strength of the cones which we found strange since most of the JBL speakers are made with carbon injected cone material.
